TMI Dry Needling

Dry Needling as a Manipulative Therapy Method

Definition

Dry Needling is a technique characterized by the insertion of a solid filament needle, without medication, through the skin, to treat various dysfunctions, including – but not limited to – myofacial pain, muscle recruitment, control of musculoskeletal pain in general, regeneration and recovery of injured tissues and even joint pain.

CH 30 h over 3 days and 6 shifts. Success: PEC FE500 Diploma in Chiropractic in Phase 1. Success in PEC Manipulative Physiotherapy and also Diploma in RTO -SBRTO.

This is a physiotherapeutic technique that is spreading rapidly due to its effectiveness and resolution. In Brazil it is still little known, but it is gaining more and more followers.

Dry Needling has been developed since 1940 through the studies of Dr. Janet Travell and was later improved by scientists such as Dr. Karel Lewit and Dr. Chang Gun.

Dr. Janet Travel, who is known as the “mother of knowledge about Myofascial Trigger Point”, in the United States, originally began her studies and clinical practice of this technique that she herself named “Dry Needling”, using hypodermic needles in the treatment of Trigger Points, with no analogy to Acupuncture or TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Only over time did other researchers begin to make this analogy.

The Concept of Dry Needling or Dry Needling was internationally established according to the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy /US, as Intra Muscular Manual Therapy, being considered in reality a segment of the areas of Manual, Musculoskeletal and Manipulative Physiotherapy, of interest to Physiotherapists of various specialties, but mainly Chiropractic, Trauma and Orthopedic Physiotherapy, Sports Physiotherapy and other areas. Thus, dry needling is a technique characterized by the insertion of a solid filamentary needle, without medication, through the skin to treat various dysfunctions including, but not limited to, myofacial pain, muscle recruitment, control of musculoskeletal pain in general, regeneration and recovery of injured tissues. and even joint pain. Is dry needling acupuncture?

Dry Needling is a distinct technique from Acupuncture and is related to Manipulative Therapy, being recognized and called Intramuscular Manipulative Therapy, which can be applied in the Intramuscular Electrostimulation mode and is related to professional specialties in the musculoskeletal area such as Manipulative Physiotherapy and Chiropractic. and Osteopathy, following the clinical approach, neurological, biomechanical and functional foundations. Dr. Chang Gunn, a Canadian doctor of Chinese origin, made it clear in his work The Gunn Approach to the Treatment of Chronic Pain that his revolutionary needling technique was not acupuncture as it was based on other concepts.

“What I do is not acupuncture but (EIM) Intra Muscular Stimulation…”

Electroneedling or Electrodry (IMS)

IMS (Intra Muscle Stimmulation) is the concept of combining dry needling with electrotherapeutic and analgesic currents. This therapy is enhanced because the skin's impedance is removed and its effect and intensity are superlative. Acupuncture equipment is not used, but rather conventional electrotherapy equipment where the parameters of frequency, amplitude and intensities are well described and traceable.

Thus, it has already been used internationally, as described in the literature, which mentions that many clinicians combine superficial and deep Dry Needling with electrical stimulation through needles. (Mayoral & Torres 2003 Mayoral-del-Moral 2005, Dommerholt et al. 2006).

What are the Dry Needling models:

Trigger Point Model: Intramuscular manipulation of trigger points, tense bands and myofascial dysfunctions.

Neuropathic model with the aim of controlling myofascial, joint pain and trauma-orthopedic pathologies based on radicular and neural intervention, causing inhibition and control of pain in reflex areas.

Regenerative Model: Stimulating increased blood circulation, promoting piezoelectric effect, improving trophic and metabolic factors with the aim of promoting tissue repair and healing.

Historic

The term Dry Needling was coined by Dr. Janet Travel, a researcher in the area of referred pain, having initially applied it to trigger point therapy, and also having the figure of Karel Lewit who began studies on the physiological effects of needling, as well as the introduction of the needle. solid filament instead of the hypodermic needle and also Dr. Chang Gunn, Canadian physician who developed the neuropathic model initially treating myofascial pain of radicular origin and wrote the book The Gunn Approach to the Treatment of Chronic Pain: Intramuscular Stimulation for Myofascial Pain of Radiculopathic Origin Instituto Coluna Vertebral, was a pioneer in Brazil, having introduced the concept of Manual/Manipulative Intra-muscular Therapy (based on the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy/US) and also the Neuropathic model for the clinical practice of Dry Needling, not only for myofascial pain of radicular origin, but also for joint and trauma-orthopedic dysfunctions.

Looking for the best training in the country!

We aim to provide training in Dry Needling in accordance with the true identity of dry needling, as a resource related to the area of Manipulative and Orthopedic Physiotherapy, named in accordance with international entities as Intramuscular Manipulative Therapy. The course is predominantly practical, in accordance with the regulations of the COFFITO regulatory ruling. Providing up to 2,000 disposable and sterile needles for practice, on average 100 needles for each student. In basic training, accredited by ABRANEEDLING, in addition to needling based on the trigger point model, initially proposed by Janet Travel, we offer principles of the history and physiology of the technique, with foundations of the regenerative and mainly neuropathic model, by Chang Gun, with an updated and contemporary, which allows a broad range of activities in trauma-orthopedic and manipulative specialties.

The use of clinical reasoning, associating the clinical practice of Dry Needling, with functional clinical diagnosis, which balances information from the clinical experience of one million needlings and 11 years of experience, associated with EBP.

Unprecedented neuropathic and regenerative treatment protocols associated with intramuscular electrical stimulation: Disc herniation, sacroiliitis, sciatica, hip and spine pain, joint kinesiopathology and myotendinous dysfunctions, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bicipital tendonitis, de Quervain's, rotator cuff injuries, capsulitis adhesive, gonioarthrosis, subtrochanteric bursitis, plantar fasciitis, Morton's neuroma, acute and chronic sprain, fracture, supracondylar, lateral and medial epicondylitis, global knee protocol, with variants in MCL and LCL, patellar injuries, approach to myotendinous ruptures and much more …
